17th March 2019 – Indoor meeting, Scole

We invited Terry Plummer back to talk to us on KID – Keep Independent and Driving.  Terry’s presentation is primarily aimed at the older driver, but the younger members attending also learned about safer driving.  Terry is a retired driving instructor and has spent the last 10 years helping people with their driving after illnesses.  He asked us if we had read the Highway Code and our vehicle handbook, to which there was not much comment!  Terry also told us that there are 35 million drivers in the UK and 4 million of them are over the age of 70.

Terry gave us some helpful hints to aid our driving.  To make sure we gave ourselves time for the journey, have regular breaks on long journeys and to ask ourselves after an outing whether it could have gone better?  He also asked us to give space and make sure we were sitting in the vehicle properly.  Many of us had heard of the “Two second rule” and Terry reminded us of it.  This rule is to count “One elephant, two elephants” when the vehicle in front has passed a road sign, and if we are at a safe distance we should be at the same road sign after saying it.  We all came away with some helpful information on our driving.

At this meeting we held a raffle and raised £40, so thank you to those members that brought raffle prizes.  Brian Lloyd celebrated his 80th birthday with a cake kindly made by our Chairman Mary Huggins and we all sang “Happy Birthday”.  Mary also brought some cakes for the refreshments which raised £22.  So the total of fundraising for the Lowestoft RNLI for the day was £62.  Well done to members.
